Philodendrons

February 25, 2021

Philodendrons are extremely diverse in their habitat as well as growth habit. They can grow climbing trees by holding on to crevices between bark, or in soil. This flexibility is one of the reasons why they are so easy to take care of. It’s almost impossible to overwater or underwater this plant.

They prefer bright filtered light, but can also do well under lower lighting conditions. As always, water plants less frequently if they are grown in lower lighting conditions.

As a side note, Philodendrons are often confused with Pothos. While they belong to the same family of Aroids, they’re separate genuses. The International Aroid Society has more details on the entire family. For this article, we’ll focus on Philodendrons.

Our favorite Philodendrons include:

Philodendron cordatum ‘Brazil’

This variety is known as the Heartleaf philodendron because its leaves are heart-shaped. ‘Brazil’ is a specific variety with striped leaves of yellow and green. Photo credit: olivehill.net
